Kim’s Story
Kim Myrick was raised here in Austin and attended the University of Texas. She majored in art and advertising. Art because she loved it, and advertising because art doesn’t pay the bills.
While in college she went on a number of mission trips with her church. She went to Mexico as well as Ukraine and Russia, which were her favorite. “It was the most intense and life changing [experience] up to that point in my life,” she said. There was one story she tells about a time in Russia where police came and raided the place where they were meeting and busted the door down with their very large guns and hauled everyone down to the police station. “[It was] basically just to scare us because they could,” she said, “… I definitely learned to trust God on that trip.”
After college Kim tried advertising, but it wasn’t for her. Thinking she would go into missions, she decided to go to seminary. She ended up in Denver and though she loved the mountains it ended up being a really rough time both spiritually and emotionally. “I went into seminary with a lot of really strong opinions about things,” she said, “until a lot of chaos happened when I was there and five people that I knew died in a very short time span. …My easy answers didn’t come so easily anymore.”
The upside of what ended up being a really hard year was that she met Sam Myrick. So after a year and a half in Denver she decided to quit school and get married. They chose Austin and she was glad to be back near family.
Kim is now a massage therapist, and it is a perfect fit. She is very passionate about her work and especially loves doing prenatal massage.
She became a mom for the first time in 2007 to Ada, who is a precocious little girl. In November of 2010 she had her second baby, David. “I get to be with them a lot which I’m grateful for,” she says, “and at other times I get to work and do a job that I love.”
Sam and Kim found Mosaic shortly after returning to Austin and fell in love with it. She said, “We both knew Mosaic was where we wanted to plant ourselves even if (Sam) wasn’t on staff.”
For Kim, Mosaic was pretty different than what she had grown up with. It was much smaller and less polished, and open to questions concerning God and theology. She admits that she’s still sorting some things out theologically, but realizes that some things will remain a mystery. “And I’m OK with that now,” she states.
Kim’s current interests are caring for individuals and families. She adds, “I enjoy smaller groups of people, eating with people, praying with people.” She really loves being able to simply sit with people through hard times, and good times.
Kim has a lot of varied interests. She still loves art; painting in particular, but also photography. Her new interest since having children has been health and nutrition. She loves cooking, especially baking. She hopes to take up traveling again when her kids are older and can come along. For now she is enjoying being a home owner and putting down some roots in Cedar Park.
