BEAUTY WILL SAVE THE WORLD

so wrote Dostoevsky in The Idiot.

Our culture is so often marked by superficiality, cynicism, nihilism, and irony.  But deep within we possess the desire for beauty – something that reawakens a longing for the Inexpressible and readies us for the abandonment of self.

Beauty isn’t always pretty.  At times it can be hard and rough and have sharp edges.  Ultimately, beauty is a holistic, even hopeful, embrace of life.  MC Talib Kweli was right, the struggle is beautiful.

Mosaic seeks this embrace in the every day: in our gardening, cooking, writing, programming, painting, dancing, praying, and playing.  Part of this embrace is embodied in Gallery5619, the gallery at our community space 5619.

In April 2010 the gallery was reconceptualized and relaunched with Congregated, an exhibition featuring the works of Andy St. Martin, Clarke Curtis, and Heidi Landeau, curated by Shea Little, co-founder of the East Austin Studio Tour.   In June we hosted I Am Human, I Am Spirit – an immersive exhibition of photography, sound clips, and narrative by photographer Kara Payne and writer Trevor Boehm.

On September September 17th, the gallery is proud to host the opening of “Still Things” by Debra Broz.
